The true spirit of the north

Arcus Project is an umbrella concept for cutting-edge developments in the Strategic Portfolio for Arcus. The mission of the Arcus Project is through experimentation, creativity, and playfulness to create, without the constraints of commercial compromise, and wander into the new land of expression, perfection, and taste.

For the first project, very cleverly named Arcus Project No. 1, the mission was to capture and create the true spirit of the north. A series of Nordic terroir spirits, made from plants and growths gathered in three unique and distinctive biotopes in the Scandinavian region – The Swedish forest, Norwegian Finnmark and the Danish heat. The botanicals were hand-picked by herbal expert Søren Espersen in each habitat. Master distiller Lars Kragelund isolated the unique properties of weather, temperature, and soil through fractional distillation. The fractions represented the bio topic origin – hence giving the connoisseur the taste of nature’s spirit at its finest.

Back into the laboratory

To meet the challenge, we developed a unique concept and outstanding packaging design. The design steers away from the artisanship tendency of the business and back into the laboratory where the master distiller works his magic — the thin blue outer paper wrapping explaining the whole process from hand gathering of plants and growths through to the sensory selection and distillation. The simple, clear bottle and the blue label is closed off by a wax seal also in bright blue, underlining the clinical laboratory feel and purposely not giving away expectations of taste.

To underline the non-commercial intentions each of the tree spirits was named after the longitude where the plants was gathered.

Created to explore the boundaries of the Aquavit categories

These projects may never see commercial sales, but elements of the projects may go into other future products – the same way as concepts cars for established car manufacturers serve as inspiration and profiling.

Only very few lucky ones have and will ever experience the taste of this unique production, some visiting top Scandinavian restaurants, and others in the company of master distiller Lars Kragelund when he servers his proudest creation to date.

Skål!

“We want to stand out as the experts. All others are either “crafted/hand-made” or “Scandinavian clean.” We embrace our industrial heritage and work in lab coats. We are not hipsters – we are professionals.”
